Gastown: A First Encounter

Gastown. Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood and a national historic site located adjacent to the Downtown Eastside.

I’ve been told many things about Gastown. Some positive, some negative. But instead of basing my thoughts on this unique district off of what others have said, I decided to experience it first hand, with a completely open mind.

Having just purchased Birkenstocks a few weeks back, I took this opportunity to walk the couple of miles from my apartment to Gastown and continue breaking them in. While both the food and architecture of Gastown are on point, I think the extra touches are what makes the area so special. The beautiful flowers hanging from every lamppost, the steam clock on the corner of Water and Cambie and the pieces of artwork placed in the most unusual of spaces.

In conclusion, I’d have to say that for me, it was love at first sight. And I kind of wish I lived closer to the neighbourhood!
